Breed profile: Munchkin

The Munchkin is undoubtedly one of the most unique cat breeds in the whole world. A natural and spontaneous genetic mutation is the reason behind its extremely short legs. This distinctive feature makes them very special, which has made it very popular in the last few years.

Weight and size

The Munchkin is a medium sized cat, and its weight is around 6 to 9 pounds. Its height can vary from 5 to 7 inches on average. Female Munchkins are typically smaller than males. 

Looks

As we mentioned, their most peculiar physical characteristic are their legs, which are shorter in proportion to the rest of their body. Pero, in spite of their reduced size, They are strong and muscular. The back legs are a little bit longer. 

When it comes to their face, their eyes are almond shaped and very apart from each other. Also, they can be of any color. On the other hand, their ears are round in the rip and big in comparison to their head. 

Their fur also varies a lot in color, there are even munchkins that have various different colors and shades in their coat. The length also changes depending on the cat, it can be long or very short.  

Origin and history

There are many doubts regarding the exact origin of this breed, since there are multiple records of cats with short legs in countries like Russia, Germany and the UK since the mid XX century. 

However, their first official presentation was made in the US in 1991 in an american show televised by the TICA (The International Cat Association) in Madison Square Garden.  

Temperament

Their personality is very similar to their appearance, they are playful, vivacious and sociable cats that at the same time are very calm. It is and active cat that likes to move, run and play and will need attention from their owners. 

These cats are great for kids and get along perfectly with other pets, and they also love to receive love and care from their family members. This cat is ideal for people looking for a loyal partner to spend time with during the day

Care

The munchkin is definitely not an exterior cat, a safe garden can be nice for it to wander, but be sure that this little fellow will spend most of the time inside with the family. 

It is advised that their coat is regularly brushed, specially for the Munchkins that have a long one. This in order to avoid knots and to keep your furniture clean.  

Health and eating habits

Munchkins, like any other cat, are carnivores, so it is important to have a high protein diet. It is recommended that when it comes to commercial food, it is mixed with wet food to improve digestion. 

If you want to make your cat’s food, make sure that it is always protein packed and mixed with vegetables and legumes. 

The munchkin is not a particularly delicate breed in the health area, but, be sure to visit the veterinarian at least once or twice a year.
