Weight and Size

One of the most important characteristics of the Ragamuffin is their huge size, which can go anywhere from 9”-12”. For weight, these cats are very heavy and robust, they can weigh between 10 to 15 pounds, and some males can even reach 20 pounds.

Looks

The Ragamuffin is a portly and strong cat with a big coat. Their fur is long and soft and the color can vary in tones. Curiously, every Ragamuffin is white at birth, and as they grow their fur changes color and starts forming different patterns.

Their body has a rectangular shape and the front part is much more slender than the back part, which ends in a beautiful, furry and long tale. Its head is small, but it looks even smaller due to the abundant coat.

Their ears are separated one from the other and are a medium size with the tips semi-round. Their beautiful eyes are nut-shaped, and just as the coat, they can be any color. The most common eye colors are blue, green and amber.

Origin

You can’t talk about the story of the Ragamuffin cat without including the origin of the Ragdoll breed. In the 60’s, a persian cat breeder named Ann Baker had a furry white cat named Josephine. After hanging out with the neighbors wild cats, Josphine produced beautiful kittens. The descendants of those cats are what are now known as ragdolls.

A group of breeders decided to breed Ragdolls to create a new breed that admitted more colors and patterns. For this, they mixed persian, himalayan and domestic longhair cats, which originated what we now know as Ragamuffins.

Temperament

The temper of a Ragamuffin is docile and sweet. They love receiving affection and they really like being carried around in their owners’ arms. Unlike other breeds, they adapt perfectly to change and are ideal for people that live in apartments.

They are extremely sociable and won’t have trouble with strangers. They are very gentle when they play, which makes them ideal for people with other pets or kids.

Care

The care for this cat is quite simple and basic.

Their huge, abundant and fluffy coat can be intimidating for anyone, but it is actually quite easy to take care of. You only need to brush it constantly, preferably 2 to 3 times a week, with a brush with metal ends.

When it comes to oral health, you should use products that are specifically made for cats to avoid any trouble, and cut their nails twice a month. To avoid eye infections, clean carefully with a wet cloth.

Health and eating habits

Being a recent breed, there is not enough record on congenital diseases, but, like any pet, it is necessary to have an annual check up with the veterinarian.

The Ragamuffins tend to have obesity problems due to their passive personality. This is why you will need to keep an eye on the amount of food they are eating, we recommend feeding them twice a day.

They do not process dairy properly, so, when it comes to liquids, stick only to water.

The Ragamuffin is one of the most beloved breeds in the world, and after getting to know more about them, we can’t deny they are irresistible. Let us know in the comments what other things you know about these cats and what other breed profiles you would like us to do.
