Curiosities about the hairless cats
Their origin is a genetic mutation. They appeared for the first time in the 60s in Canada, due to a mutation that occurred naturally in a cat of the Devon Rex breed. From this first mutated cat, the new breeds that exist nowadays were created.
There are 6 breeds of hairless cats. Even though all cats with no hair come from the same line of succession, other mutations appeared leading to the current breeds that are currently known. All of them of Canadian origin.
Actually, they do have hair. These cats have their body covered with hair, as all mammals, but in their case, their hair is a very thin coat hardly noticeable.
Many do not even have whiskers. These cats do not usually have the fur so typical of the whiskers, eyebrows and eyelashes. Isn’t it odd?
They have a higher body temperature. To compensate for the lack of hair, their body temperature is up to 4ºC higher than that of other cats.
They need to be bathed every week. Unlike other cats, hairless cats do not clean themselves up and they tend to sweat, so they need a weekly bath to be always clean.
