What foods are prohibited for us cats?

Besides dry pellets or moist cat food, you often don’t know what foods are good or could be just prohibited for us cats when giving us some “treat” or including them in a homemade diet. Some of them may not be good for use because they’re not nutritious enough, and others can be out and out toxic.

So, today I’m bringing you a list of all those foods you should avoid in our diet so that your best friend will be healthy and can keep you company for many years to come.

  • Milk: Despite the fact that many people associate milk with cats, the truth is that when we grow up we become lactose-intolerant, and so milk causes us many a problem regarding digestion.

  • Meats or other salty products: Any product which is overly salty isn’t going to be good for your cat, because the salt builds up in our kidneys preventing us from eliminating toxins, besides causing us high blood pressure.

  • Chocolate: The first thing you should know is that we cats can’t distinguish sweet flavors, so it doesn’t make too much sense to give us chocolate. And chocolate also contains Thebromine, which is a toxic poison for us that can even be lethal.

  • Nuts and avocado: These are highly fatty products for us that our stomach isn’t able to digest properly, so these products can cause us problems including kidney failure and diarrhea.

  • Grapes and raisins: Even in small amounts, these foods can cause us kidney failure.

  • Sweets: Sweets are one of the foods which are too fatty for our organism.

  • Onion, leeks and garlic: Although you may think these foods are healthy, they are highly toxic for us. They destroy our red blood cells and can cause us anemia.

  • Caffeine or alcohol: We’re sure that, in principle, none of you would even ever think of giving us caffeine or alcohol, but you should know that in the event that your cat were to accidentally take either one, caffeine causes severe disorders to our nervous system, along with vomiting and diarrhea, and can even kill us. On the other hand, alcohol is highly toxic for us, and could even kill us if we were to drink a large amount.

  • Raw fish: No matter how sure you think you are about fish being our favorite food, fish contains an enzyme that causes us Vitamin B deficiency in the long run.

So, as you can see, lots of foods that “seem” healthy can actually be dangerous for us. That’s why it’s recommendable that you feed us a combination of dry pellet and moist cat food and, of course, that you ask your veterinarian if you have any questions in your mind.
