Encontré un gatito al aire libre. ¿Qué tengo que hacer?

More and more little kitties are being abandoned and left to fend for themselves. I don’t know what causes humans to commit such a barbaric act, but luckily a great many of you still have a heart and are picking us up off the street to find us a new home. But it’s not just about whether or not one has good intentions. You must have it clear in your mind what you should do in the event of finding a kitty on the street.

The first thing to do is to make certain that the cat you’ve come across is actually homeless. If it looks well-kept, has a lustrous coat and seems to be feeling at ease, the most logical thing to think is that it’s out exploring and will be going back home when it gets tired. But on the contrary, if you see it’s dishevelled, desperately looking for food, acting skittish or seems to be sick, then it’s an abandoned kitty.

Make certain that the place where the cat is located is not dangerous. If the place is safe, take a picture of the kitty and ask around among your neighbours and friends in the area to see if they’ve lost a cat or know anyone who is looking for one they’ve lost. If you find out that someone has indeed, you’ll have no other choice than to try to catch the cat.

You’ll need some time and a good amount of patience. Progressively leave it some food on the ground, adding a bit more when the cat eats what you’ve left. Once you find that you can sit down relatively close to the cat, let is progressively come closer to you and smell you, and when you can, pick it up and wrap it in a blanket to keep it warm.

The next step consists going to see a veterinarian to find out whether or not the cat has an identification chip and for a check-up to make sure it’s in good health. If the cat has a chip and you locate its owner, all the better. Otherwise, you’ll have to decide whether to take care of the cat yourself or turn it over to an animal shelter to find it a forever home.

If you decide to keep the kitty, remember that you must make that decision bearing in mind everything that’s involved in taking good care of a cat.  Expenses for visits to the veterinarian, food, litterboxes and cat litter. Remember that they’re living beings and, as such, deserve to be treated decently and always be provided with good care. But you’ll never regret having taken it into your home, I assure you!
