How to determine the gender of your kitten

Until they are 3 weeks old, it is very difficult to know the sex of a baby kitten. The external genitalia are not yet fully formed, and the female babies are very similar to the male kittens.

It is when they are 21 days old when we begin to appreciate some differences between female and male cats. Although it is common for many people to be wrong when venturing to say the gender of a kitten when it is barely a few weeks old, with a simple visual examination you can get an idea of whether it is a male or a female.

Discover how to differentiate if a kitten is male or female with two very simple and practical techniques.

How to tell the gender of your kitten

The genitals of a cat are just below its tail. To tell the gender of a kitten, you will only have to lift his/her tail and do a visual exam.

Look for the anal hole that is below the tail and the urinary opening. The young male kittens have not yet developed the penis or testicles, but you can see that there is more distance between the anus and the opening where they pee, approximately 2 or 3 cm. In the case of female kittens, both openings are close together.

When the kitten is about a month and a half old, you can see that his testicles are more evident, and you can tell if it is female or male unequivocally.

The colours of the cats according to their sex

There are some characteristics in the fur of the kittens that can tell us clearly if it is male or female.

Males usually have just one or two different colours in their fur. The most frequent colours in the male sex are black and orange. But if the kitten is born with up to 3 different colours in its fur, it is most likely that it is a female.

And you, do you already know for sure if your baby kitten is male or female? Does it meet these common characteristics?
