How to keep the litter box clean

For cats and owners alike, having a clean litter box is a matter of high importance. Keeping this area in optimal higiene conditions will prevent your house from filling up with unpleasant odors and it will allow your cat to properly use the litter. 

A dirty litter box can alter your pets mood, and could even make your cat stop using it as a way of protest. If you have noticed that your cat starts peeing all over your house, you are probably not cleaning its litter box correctly.

Daily litter care

In order to keep a litter box clean it is primary that your cat feels comfortable with the box and litter that you choose. In this way, your pet will do everything it can to keep this space clean.   

First of all, you have to know how to choose the type of litter box for your and your cat’s needs. Remember that it has to be at least 1.5 times larger than your pet so it can use it comfortably. 

Once you pick the box, you have to know what type of litter suits you better. Every cat is unique and their preferences may vary, which is why there isnt a type of litter that is the best. Remember that you need to scoop out cumpls at least once a day, and the litter change will vary depending on the type you use. 

How to clean the litter box

It is important that a deep box cleanse is made once a week. For this, follow these steps, 

  • Empty out the litter box completely. 
  • Pour hot water on the box and add soap.
  • Let the water and soap sit for 15 minutes.
  • Scrub the box with the help of a brush.
  • Once you are done, remove the soapy water and rinse with cold water.
  • Dry the box and add completely new litter.  

If after this your litter box still has stains, we recommend that you scrub again with water and a little bit of white vinegar. 

Odor control 

In order to control the odors, it is important that we try to sterilize once in a while, could be after you clean and scrub the box, before you put the new litter on. It is not required to do this additional process every time you clean the litter, but it is recommended to do it at least once a month. 

If you want to control the odors that come from the box, add a thin layer of baking soda at the bottom of the clean box and cover it with new litter. 

And remember that if you use clumping litter, it isn’t necessary that you deeply clean the box weekly.
